Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: The most exciting thing that has happened to me at Hartwick is being able to create my own major or ISP (Individual Student Program). I created a major that really only exists as a Graduate degree, until now that is. International Public Relations tends to my career path needs and makes me stand out on the job market. It took a full semester of creation and reworks to get the board to approve it but when they did I felt accomplished and that my life was headed in the right direction. I felt like all my hard work and time spent figuring out what I was to do with my life paid off. To learn more about the Individual Student Program at Hartwick, you can click here!

Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: During the spring of my Sophomore year I was cast as Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors. I was also cast as a sociopath in a movie and the filming was happening on the same day as the musical. I spent the first half of my day in the woods filming scene after scene of evil monologues and psychotic rampages. My night I spent singing psychotic songs about dentistry. In both performances I got to die terrific deaths, one sputtering and spitting the other singing and gasping for air. I’ve never had as much fun dying as I did that day.

Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: Going into college, I never imagined that I could produce an eighty page thesis about Victorian literature, but my senior year, I did. The day I turned it in was absolutely surreal. One of my friends and I were working on our theses and decided we needed a pep talk, so we went to one of our favorite professors. He told us how hard it is to write a thesis and that imperfect things still have value and that the entire department was so proud of us for completing such a monstrous project. When we walked out of his office, we immediately ran into two other people who were writing two semester theses and had handed theirs in. When we were talking to them, another girl walked in with her printed thesis held above her head, ready to turn it in, and we all started screaming and hugging. We were all delirious and sleep deprived and it was just an amazing moment of community that absolutely sums up why I loved the English Department at my school so much.

College: Rochester Institute of Technology
Major: Business Management
Anticipated Graduation Date: 2019
Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: Honestly one of the best parts of college for me was that all my professors love what they do, have enormous experience, and are driven to see all of their students succeed. When in one of my classes there was a very low average on a test, my professor didn’t blame anyone,he sat down and asked how he could make it better for us. I really began to love what I was learning through all this.

Jobs/Internships Had While In College: Dollar A Day experience
Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: During the “Dollar a Day” experience that I was a part of, I was given the opportunity to see how it is to live off $1 per day. Although I could not actually live off $1 a day because of health reasons, I was still able to use my dining plan and live comfortably in my dorm. We were only allowed to use our dollar for any “extras” such as coffee, a snack, things like that. We also had the choice to save our dollars that we received and spend them on other things. It made us really appreciate what we had and was definitely eye opening even though it was such a small thing.

Jobs Had While In College: Teaching Assistant for Introduction to the Analysis of Public Policy (PAF101 with Kremler, but the version at SU with Coplin!)
Study Abroad Experience: I studied abroad in Grahamstown, South Africa (through a program called Implementing and Evaluating Health Education Programs) during the summer of 2015 where I volunteered at a non-profit called “Inkululeko” (which means “freedom” in the South African language of Xhosa). The non-profit is designed to help impoverished South African youth who live in townships break cycles of poverty and graduate high school and enroll at university. I was able to tutor these youth and help them complete a “PhotoVoice” project about the assets in their community.
Describe the most fun, weird, interesting, exciting or inspiring experience you have had while in college: I think the most inspiring experience I have had in college is teaching poetry every week to students in the Syracuse City School District. The resilience of these kids, the majority of whom live in or near poverty and are racial minorities, is just so palpable. It’s always incredible to watch our students take control of their lives through their poetry and the writing of their own narrative. Plus, the kids are literally hysterical. So funny.
