Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: The teachers and faculty of the GESD always pushed me to do well and succeed. Because they believed in me I could believe in myself. My teachers taught me that hard work pays off. The core values I learned in Gloversville helped me get through college and continue to help me every day in my career. Each and every student that comes through the GESD will get out of it what they put in. I encourage students to get involved in community and after school programs and to stay focused, positive and never feel bad about seeking help. Darci Luci

Darci Luci-Pettit

Current Occupation: Senior Staff Accountant
GHS Graduating Class: 1998
Current City of Residence: Gloversville, New York
Educational Background: I attended FMCC for two years and then immediately went and received my Bachelors from Siena College.
Job Description: I was a teenage mom at the age of 16. I graduated high school on time and then immediately went on to college. My career goal was to work in the business sector. Through hard work and commitment I am fulfilling my goal. I am currently a Senior Staff Accountant for a local Certified Public Accounting (CPA) Firm. I have been in the public accounting spectrum for over ten years. My duties include audits, tax preparation for individuals and businesses, and tax planning. I have worked in the private sector as a Finance & Human Resources Manager. My long-term career goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant.
Q: Why do you want to be a mentor?
A: As a high school student you may not know what you want to be, what college to go to and/or what steps you need to take to get there. I found my own path and I would like to give back to the youth. I had my son while in high school and I managed to graduate on time, attend FMCC, and receive my Bachelor’s degree from Siena all within 4.5 years. I would like to mostly give back to the youth with children and let them know that their dreams and aspirations can still happen. My son is a senior this year at GHS and I help mentor a couple of his friends. I enjoy giving back because right now these kids do not understand the impact that we can give them. I don’t want them to wait until they are older to go after their dreams. I am still chasing one of my dreams, becoming a CPA, and chasing later in life isn’t so easy.

Lance Gundersen

Lance Gundersen

Current Occupation: Power Plant Operator
Former Occupation: United States Navy Submarine Force
GHS Graduating Class: 1982
Current City of Residence: Gloversville, New York
Educational Background: I attended Fulton-Montgomery Community College from 1982-1983 with a focus on political science and psychology. I then enlisted in the Navy where I did 15 years, retiring earlier than the usual 20 years due to a special program in place at the time. While on active duty I was trained on submarine atmosphere control systems, hydraulics, refrigeration, care and maintenance on the huge reserve diesel engine, as well as some of the softer “systems” including maintenance and material management, supply pipeline management and quality control, as well as numerous hours of leadership development training.

After the Navy, I attended Nassau Community College on Long Island, and am currently a student of Community and Economic Development at Empire State University. My planned graduation date is 2016 at which point I’ll move right into my Masters program with an expected graduation date in 2018.
Job Description: My current job could be described like a video game where you don’t get the opportunity to respawn. You either do it right, or there’s problems. I am a control room operator at natural gas fired power plant south of Albany, NY (I commute on a rotating shiftwork schedule).
The job entails the use of fourteen computer interfaces operating four different ladder logic based control systems (one is called a DCS – Distributed Control System, and the other is called the Mark 6). These interfaces allow me to check pressures, temperatures, flowrates and other data throughout the plant, and manipulate valves, sensors and equipment such as fans, pumps and gas turbines.

I am also required to respond to readings that don’t seem right by directing personnel to the source of the problem, and through the use of computerized historical trending to build computer models that will hopefully show where and why something is going wrong. Some places call this predictive engineering.

There are other duties assigned to the position as well including the initial coordinating of plant-wide emergencies, the production of various written reports and often a need to fill in for junior personnel out in the plant when there are vacancies.

The job prospects in this industry are very good. The average age of plant personnel is around 57, which means we are due for a huge number of retirements in the next 5 to 8 years. Pay and benefits in this industry are second to none. It is also important to note that companies in this industry will hire college grads who have degrees in electrical engineering and related fields, but they are very very fond of hiring former sailors with engineering experience. More than 75% of the people at my facility have prior Navy experience.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: I first have to note that, except for a brief stint in 2nd grade at McNab, my father being in the Navy meant I moved around a lot. I came back to Gloversville in 1975 and re-started my time in GESD at Estee Middle School, sixth grade. How good my education was in this school system wasn’t apparent to me until I left the area for the Navy. Working with people from throughout the country (and even the world) it became obvious that Estee and GHS provided a solid educational foundation. I was able to do my 12th grade year at FMCC, move seamlessly into my second college year and then, when the decision was made that I’d go in the Navy (following in the family tradition), my scores on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (86%) and Nuclear Forces Qualification Test (96%) could never have happened without a solid education foundation. My current job (power plant operator) builds upon the skills I learned in the Navy – skills I never could have acquired if I didn’t already possess strong fundamentals.

He will be undertaking a research capstone project soon, where he will be genetically engineering a hybrid virus between a virus that only infects mosquitos and West Nile Virus, examining it’s mechanism of infection within human cells to better understand the overall process of infections within RNA viruses, and also looking at micro-RNA and how that ties into the pathology of the hybrid. He has a good background in the sciences and loves doing research and is currently applying for PhD programs in the Northeast, where he intends on making a lifelong career out of cancer research.
Job Description: I am currently working with NYS Department of Health earning a Masters degree in Laboratory Sciences. Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: Gloversville has prepared me in many ways. The student – teacher relationships I’ve formed at Gloversville really helped me achieve a level of critical thinking and academic preparedness that set me up for success in all aspects of my undergraduate career. The classes offered at Gloversville really helped me get an idea of what I wanted to focus on and specialize in while attending college.

beth whitman-putnam

Beth Whitman-Putnam

Former Occupation: City of Gloversville Fire Chief, also held ranks of Dispatcher, Firefighter, Captain, and Battalion Chief
GHS Graduating Class: 1985
Current City of Residence: Town of Johnstown, New York
Educational Background: Graduate of Gloversville High School, Graduate of Schenectady County Community College with Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection Technology, Graduate of NYS Fire Academy as a NYS certified firefighter (27 years in fire service), Graduate of First Line Supervisor School in NYC – NYS Fire Instructor and NYS Fire Officer, NYS certified Level 2 Fire Investigator with Pro-Board certification, NYS Hazardous Materials Technician, NYS Code Enforcement Officer, 20+ years as an Emergency Medical Technician and Advanced EMT, Countless hours in professional development studies by in-service training, completing NYS Fire Courses, ICS courses, re-certification requirements and numerous conferences and seminars at various training locations.
Job Description: I am retired (June 2014) and now recently nationally certified, through Bryant and Stratton College, as an electrocardiographic technician and I will be pursuing a career in that field.

As Fire Chief I was responsible for all activities of the fire department and code enforcement within the City of Gloversville. I was responsible for planning and coordinating all firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical services, fire investigations, code enforcement activities, and all administrative duties including preparing and maintaining the fire department budget. I was responsible for the protection of lives (civilian and firefighters) and property and responsible for training personnel and the maintenance of high standards of performance and discipline of all firefighters within the department. My work was performed in accordance with policy, objectives, and laws and it required independent sound judgement as well as being in a physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: I did not share my dream of being a firefighter with family or anyone at school while I was there. I had never seen a female firefighter and I knew it was a non-traditional role for women. I was actually preparing to become a secretary and was focusing on business/secretarial courses of study while in high school; however, the Gloversville School District did prepare me for further education and a career in the fire service by providing the classes and skills needed to graduate and to be successful. Education is so very important and Gloversville provided me with a great foundation for the future. It also provided me with the skills needed for relationship building and teamwork which play a big part in being successful in life.

James Bielli

Jimmy Bielli

Current Occupation: Meteorologist/Ship Router
GHS Graduating Class: 2009
Current City of Residence: Poughkeepsie, New York
Educational Background: I graduated in May 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics from Lyndon State College (Vermont). During my college years, I also served as a math tutor and physics tutor and had an internship forecasting weather conditions and road surface conditions for the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
Job Description: I currently work for a company that issues weather forecasts and recommendations for the shortest and safest trans-ocean or coastal routes for cargo ships, yachts, cruise ships, and research vessels in every ocean basin worldwide. My company also provides reports to vessel owners and charterers detailing the engine performance of their vessels relative to the weather and ocean conditions in which they were sailing throughout the voyage.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: Gloversville High School really does have a wide variety of opportunities available to those who take them. When I was in high school, I took advantage of the many Advanced Placement (AP) courses available, as well as a few directly through SUNY Albany and Syracuse University, even those in subjects I had no intentions of studying in college. Not only did they result in some very inexpensive college credits, they’re also great courses taught by excellent teachers, and I genuinely learned a lot taking them. Being that I majored in Atmospheric Sciences in college, I can honestly say that Mrs. Hallenbeck’s Honors English 12 class, for example, was far more difficult and demanding than any literature or humanities course I took in college, but was well worth it, not only because it forced me to read books and educate myself in ways I never would have dreamed of doing independently, but it also got me out of having to take not one but TWO English courses in college!

Stephanie Alam

Ms. Stephanie Alam

Current Occupation: English Teacher / English Department Chair
Former Occupation: Medical Office / Secretarial
Educational Background: Associate in Arts from FMCC, Bachelor of Arts from UAlbany, Master of Science from UAlbany
Job Description: I have been an English teacher for almost 15 years. I have taught students at both the middle and high school levels. I teach at Gloversville High School.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: I am incredibly proud of the fact that I’m a graduate of the GESD! My teachers were consistently helpful, encouraging, inspiring, hard working, and dedicated. I always knew that they were concerned about me not only as a student, but also as a human being. By the time I entered kindergarten, my mother faced extremely difficult challenges with her health. This struggle went on for many years and while it made conditions difficult for my family and me, school became a special place – a comforting place – for me. The teachers in the district nurtured me and they continuously reminded me of my ability and my strength. Through their encouragement, I strongly understood that I could succeed.

Admittedly, I took an extra special liking to my English teachers, because they taught me stories about fascinating people in far away places. That was cool! I fell in love with the words in Shakespeare’s plays. The words were strange to me, but they got my attention because they were different. I liked that! I met all sorts of fascinating characters in books, and within them I could see myself.

Could other people see themselves in the characters, too? I wondered. They sure could, my teachers showed me time and time again.

The connections that I developed with my teachers at GHS, along with the discovery that we all can see ourselves in literary characters, made me appreciate that life and literature are about “being human” and that we humans are all connected.

The Glove-to-Glove Mentoring Program is all about connections, too. This is why I chose to become a mentor.

Jessica S. Mansmith, MNA

Current Occupation: Principal Consultant, Jessica Mansmith, Inc.
GHS Graduating Class: 1994
Educational Background: 1994 GHS, 1999 SUNY Albany, Bachelor of Arts, English & Fine Arts minor (3.4 GPA), 2009 University of San Francisco, Master of Arts, Nonprofit Administration (3.9 GPA)
Job Description: My consulting firm helps nonprofits with fundraising, marketing, communications, event planning, management and strategy. In the community, I volunteer as the President of the Board of Directors for an arts nonprofit and mentor a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: Just like any other student at GHS, I had good days as well as bad. However, I also had a lot of problems at home and acted out at school, skipped classes, ignored assignments and paid the price by going to summer school every year. I was one of those bright kids you hear about: high IQ, bored with limiting coursework, dealing with emotional issues, ignored by most adults and falling through the cracks. Halfway through 11th grade, I realized that if I didn’t get with the program, I was already living my future. I decided to apply myself, get involved at school and look toward attending college. If I wanted more and felt I deserved more out of life, then I had to work for more. It was that simple. Absolutely nothing was going to be handed to me on a silver platter. This sparked a determination that shaped me over 15 years, from a student who graduated GHS as #154 out of 185 students, to earning a Master’s Degree with a 3.9 GPA… in San Francisco, of all places.

My experience at GHS taught me that if I want something badly enough and I’m willing to work for it, it can be mine. When dreams or goals seem like they are out of reach, they really aren’t! I just need to make a plan, be willing to take baby steps as well as giant leaps of faith, maybe go down a more twisting path than I would like, and just keep pushing forward.

Current Occupation: Director of Admissions and Student Recruitment
GHS Graduating Class: 1996
Educational Background: Bachelor of Science in Communications from Susquehanna University, Class of 2000. Master of Science in Human Resource Management from Rivier University, Class of 2004
Job Description: I work with undergraduate students from all over the country who are looking to earn their graduate degree in management, education, engineering or bioethics. I travel to events to help recruit these students and help them learn about our programs, then help them through the admissions process. My responsibilities include coordinating campus visits, campus recruiting events, overseeing the admissions and scholarship process, managing the enrollment in these programs and supervising our admissions staff. My days are busy and full of meetings and communication with prospective students! I have worked in higher education for a total of 15 years and truly enjoy helping students find the program that is the right fit, and then watching them move toward a great career path as a result of their education.
Q: How did GHS prepare you for your career?
A: Looking back, there are a few things at GHS that helped build the foundation for my education and eventual career success. First, the opportunity to take college classes while in high school through SUNY Albany and Syracuse University allowed me to start college with a whole semester worth of credits completed. That gave me the flexibility to take other classes in college that I normally would not have had time to complete. The other thing that was a big part of my life at GHS was involvement in student leadership; student government, honor society, softball and being a class officer. Learning to stay organized, multi-task and communicate with others are crucial to any career and I started learning those skills in my various leadership positions at GHS.
